PREMEDICAL COURSE
This is a Russian intensive program for students wishing to continue their studies at the Odessa National Medical University (ONMU) or any other University in Ukraine. The duration of the preparatory course is one year. Upon successful completion, a diploma is awarded.
FOUNDATION COURSE
This course is specially designed for the foreign students who do not have the necessary requirements for the undergraduate programs and also it helps to enable students to bridge the gap between school and University. The duration of the foundation course is one year.
COURSE CALENDAR
At Odessa National Medical University (ONMU) the academic year is divided into two semesters. The first semester starts on the first of September and lasts till the last week of January. The second semester starts in the first week of February lasts till mid of June. The studies at the University start on the 1st of September and at the pre-medical department – on the 1st of October every year.
Within the week there are 5 working days, Saturday and Sunday are holidays. The studies are scheduled from 8.00 to 16.00. The student’s working week comprises 54 hours; within this time period, there are 36 lecturing hours and 18 hours for independent work.
The teaching course period includes the time of teaching semesters, final control and vacations. The teaching year is 12 months long and comprises teaching days, days of final control, examination sessions, day off, celebration and vacation days. Visiting of all kinds of studies (except for consultations) is obligatory for the students.
Summer vacation covers the month of July and August. During holidays students may have easy access to CIS countries & all countries in Europe by bus, train, and flights. Special program and trips are also available to enable students to experience first hand the transition process in Russia or Ukrainian, CIS counties and elsewhere in Europe.
ASSESSMENT
Students are expected to complete successfully all particular courses before being approved for promotion to the next year. During each semester students, performance in all mandatory courses is evaluated and recorded.
The final assessment is determined by the instructions of the departments or clinics holding the course. At the end of each course, the student ranking is evaluated from the score achieved in multiple-choice tests (MCQ) written, oral and/or examinations.
The student assessment scale includes the following grades:
• 5,0 – very good
• 4,5 – more than good
• 4,0 – good
• 3,5 – quite good
• 3,0 – satisfactory
• 2,0 – fail
Some courses use only pass/fail.
If the student fails tests or exams according to the school regulations she/he may take them again.
The final state examinations on all the disciplines according to the syllabus are held within one system through 2 stages:
• testing the practical proficiency of final-year students (during the examination testing takes place at the patient’s bed)
• testing scientific/theoretical proficiency.
If the student fails to take an exam at the appointed date without any reasonable excuse she/he is assigned a non-passing grade or “failure” that is documented at her/his records. Before graduating candidate is required to complete successfully all the courses by passing examinations with the final grade assigned at least as “satisfactory”.
